VMWARE RVTOOLS → STACKIT
From an RVTools export to a STACKIT assessment
An RVTools export is enough to start: StackToIT reads its vInfo, vDisk and vNetwork sheets on your computer, gives every VM, template and port group a STACKIT target, a class and a reason, and writes STACKIT Terraform for the servers, volumes and networks. It installs nothing in the VMware environment and does not connect to vCenter.
Port groups become STACKIT networks
A small RVTools export written for this page and assessed by StackToIT on 4 November 2026. Left: the input. Right: the resource blocks of the STACKIT Terraform the engine wrote; the review comments above each block in the file are left out here.

}One network per port group
PG-Shop-Web, PG-Shop-App and PG-Shop-DB become three STACKIT networks. The distributed switch dvs-shop has no meaning on STACKIT and is not carried over.
Prefix asked for, addresses shown
RVTools exports no subnet masks, so the IPv4 prefix of each network is a variable. Its description lists the addresses seen on the port group, for PG-Shop-Web 10.20.10.11 and 10.20.10.12.
Machines keep their addresses
Each adapter of the four VMs becomes a STACKIT network interface with the IPv4 address from the export, so shop-web01 keeps 10.20.10.11 on the network that replaces PG-Shop-Web.
DNS servers as an input
RVTools does not show which DNS servers the VMs use, so the nameservers of each network are a variable you set to the DNS servers of your site.
A VM template becomes a STACKIT image
From the same run. Left: the input. Right: the result StackToIT recorded for it, an excerpt of assessment.json with the values exactly as the run wrote them.

}
}Template flag read per row
tpl-ubuntu2204 is marked Template = True, so it is classified REPLATFORM with STACKIT image as the target, while the four powered-on VMs become servers.
Two ways to the image
Export the VMDK, convert it to qcow2 or raw and upload it, or rebuild the image from a STACKIT public image with the same provisioning.
How the export maps
| VMware object | STACKIT target | Migration class |
|---|---|---|
| 4 powered-on VMs: shop-web01, shop-web02, shop-api01, shop-pg01 | STACKIT server with boot volume and network interface; further disks as volumes | Reconfigure |
| VM template tpl-ubuntu2204 | STACKIT image | Replatform |
| 3 port groups | STACKIT networks | Reconfigure |
Classes as the run decided them, all at confidence MEDIUM. The disk and adapter rows were joined to their VMs: 7 of 7 vDisk rows and 5 of 5 vNetwork rows matched.
What each sheet contributes
vInfo: the machines
CPUs, memory, power state, guest OS and the template flag decide whether a row becomes a server or an image and which size the server is planned against.
vDisk: the disks
The first disk becomes the boot volume and every further disk a STACKIT volume, with the capacity converted from MiB to GiB: 512000 MiB becomes a 500 GiB volume.
vNetwork: the connections
Each adapter row names its port group and IPv4 address, which become the network and the fixed address of the interface.
Settings for your review
For every VM the assessment lists the settings a person confirms, among them power state, VMware Tools, machine size, disk mode, memory reservation and snapshots.

Questions VMware teams ask
Does StackToIT need access to vCenter?
No. StackToIT reads the RVTools file on your computer. It installs nothing in the VMware environment and does not connect to vCenter.
Which RVTools formats does StackToIT read?
An .xlsx workbook or a directory of per-sheet CSV files, as RVTools writes them. If the input type is not detected, add --input rvtools to the command.
What do we add to the RVTools data?
The IP prefix and DNS servers of each network, the STACKIT machine types and the converted disk images. RVTools describes infrastructure, not application behaviour, so application dependencies and cutover timing come from the workload owners.
